Catholic Labor Relations Report

“In a sense, unions go back to the medieval guilds of artisans, insofar as those organizations brought together people belonging to the same craft and thus on the basis of their work…. The experience of history teaches that organizations of this type are an indispensable element of social life…”

Pope John Paul II, Laborem Exercens (20)

Catholic social teaching endorses the right of workers to form labor unions and calls upon labor and management to establish cooperative relationships to advance their craft and the common good. When Catholic institutions and trade unions establish mutually rewarding partnerships, they exercise a true magisterium in deed as well as in word; when Catholic schools and hospitals are embroiled in conflict and recriminations with their workers they stand the risk of giving scandal to the faithful.

This page is dedicated to the CLN Catholic Employer Project, tracking labor relations at Catholic institutions across the United States. The CLN is pleased to report that we have identified well over 100 Catholic institutions in the United States modeling Catholic social teaching through their collaborative, mutually rewarding relations of collective bargaining with their direct and indirect (contract) employees – and this list is hardly exhaustive! But truth requires that we also acknowledge that a relative handful of Catholic schools and hospitals are embroiled in labor disputes. These too are noted below.

The Catholic Employer Project produces a monthly bulletin on labor relations developments involving Catholic institutions and entrepreneurs. To subscribe, contact

Fair Labor Procurement Policies

Many Catholic institutions recognize the influence that their purchases have on society and the market, so they adopt fair labor policies governing their procurement of goods and services. This might require vendors to utilize union labor, pay a living wage or certify that imported goods are not produced in sweatshops.

University Garments

The following Catholic colleges and universities are reported as members of the Workers’ Rights Consortium, which inspects and certifies fair labor practices by vendors of college logo goods and garments:

·    Aquinas College
·    Bellarmine University
·    Boston College
·    The College of the Holy Cross
·    Duquesne University
·    Fordham University
·    Georgeotwn University
·    Gonzaga University
·    John Carroll University

·    Loyola University Chicago
·    St. John’s University
·    Saint Louis University
·    Saint Mary’s College
·    University of Notre Dame
·    Villanova University
·    Xavier University

Church and/or School Construction

The following are reported to require fair labor policies of some kind in major construction projects:

  • Archdiocese  of Chicago (IL)
  • Archdiocese  of Louisville (KY)
  • Diocese of Owensboro (KY)
  • Archdiocese of Milwaukee (WI)
  • Diocese of Youngstown (OH)
  • Archdiocese of Cincinnati (OH)
  • Archdiocese of Boston (MA)
  • Archdiocese of Baltimore (MD)
  • Archdiocese  of Washington (DC)

Luctus et Angor

Catholic Institutions in Labor Disputes

Manhattan College, New York NY and St. Xavier University, Chicago IL. Adjunct faculty at both schools are seeking to organize, but both schools are seeking a ruling from the US NLRB exempting them from National Labor Relations Act coverage. Both schools are arguing that if they choose not to recognize and bargain with representatives of their employees, the NLRB cannot order them to do so because they are religious institutions. In other words, these colleges argue that they are TOO Catholic to be subject to the Labor Board but NOT Catholic ENOUGH to honor Catholic social teaching!
